CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Turin NeT-ZERO CITY: TOWARDS A STRATEGIC APPROACH

R3C Collaborating in the Joint workshop with Université Paris Sorbonne Organised in the framework of POLITO School of Planning and Design

FOCUS & ACTIVITIES

Europe has pledged to lead on climate action and has set forth ambitious goals and directives to achieve that commitment. The European Green Deal and other European Union policies and directives propel European Member States towards a 55% cut in emissions by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050. Cities are envisioned to lead in this respect, achieving zero carbon faster and ensuring our decarbonisation efforts are equitable and contribute to the well-being of European communities.

In order to support this process, in 2021 the European Commission launched a Call for Expression of Interest to allow cities to state their interest in becoming climate-neutral by 2030 and to submit information on their current situation, ongoing work, and future plans with regard to climate neutrality. Following the Call, the Commission has chosen 100 of the 377 applicant cities, coming from all 27 Member States as well as 12 additional cities coming from associated countries. These 112 cities are now being invited to develop participatory Climate City Visions, which will include an overall strategy for climate neutrality across all sectors such as energy, buildings, waste management and transport. As one of the selected cities, Torino is now required to develop an overarching vision that is tailored to suit local and regional contexts and will support its decarbonisation through new and existing tools, resources, and expertise.

Acknowledging this challenge, the proposed workshop will face students with the development of sound and coherent thematic strategies, aimed at contributing to the development of said vision towards a just and green transition. In the occasion of the workshop, the students will receive a number of disciplinary and context-related inputs, that introduce the challenges that they will have to focus on, and present possible ways to approach them. During their activity, they will be supervised and mentored by an international, multi-disciplinary teaching staff.
